Why Slowletter

Why Slowletter works for language exchange

Real context, not flashcards

A letter forces you to construct real sentences about real things. It is the closest thing to immersion from your desk.

Mutual benefit built in

Ask your partner which languages they want to practice and whether they welcome feedback. Agree on an exchange that works for both of you.

No pressure to perform

You can draft, rewrite, and send when you are ready. Language learning should not feel like a test.

Friendships, not just practice

Many language partners become lasting friends. Slowletter is designed for connection, not just correction.

How it's different

What makes Slowletter different for language learning

Language exchange works best when both people genuinely want to connect, not just complete a session.

Profile language preferences

You can use letters and chat to practice writing. Matching considers your listed languages but does not guarantee a native speaker, particular country or reciprocal language pair.

The letter format slows you down (in a good way)

Writing a full letter means practising grammar, vocabulary, and expression all at once. There is no shortcut to tap through.

Choose whether to connect

A letter comes first; recipients can see sender details before accepting. There is no public profile directory.

Stays connected after the letter

Chat opens when the recipient accepts your letter.

Is Slowletter right for your language practice?

Slowletter gives you a way to introduce yourself through writing and meet someone for an ongoing conversation. It suits learners who want time to draft a message about everyday life. You can say which language you hope to practise and ask whether the recipient would enjoy exchanging messages in it.

How to get started

  1. Create your profile, enable Language Exchange, and add the languages you speak or are learning. Include your learning goal in your first letter.
  2. Write your introduction and send it using one letter credit. Slowletter looks for an eligible recipient; it may take time to find one.
  3. If the recipient accepts, a private chat opens. Start with a small exchange and let the conversation grow at a pace that works for both of you.

Start with a small language exchange

Write a short introduction in the language you are learning, explain your level, and ask one everyday question. Ask whether your partner wants corrections before offering them, and agree together on which languages to use.

Example first letter

Hi! I'm learning French and can write a few sentences about my day. I enjoy cooking and would love to practise talking about food. Would you enjoy a short exchange? What did you cook this week?

Questions about language exchange on Slowletter

Will I be matched with a native speaker of my target language?
That is not guaranteed. Shared profile languages are one matching signal, alongside interests, intents, activity, and discovery preferences. Slowletter does not guarantee a native speaker or a reciprocal language pair. Ask about languages and learning goals when you connect.
Can I use Slowletter for lessons or live speaking practice?
Slowletter is built around introductory letters and private chat after acceptance, including text and voice messages. It does not provide a lesson curriculum, automatic language corrections, or live voice and video calls. Use it to find a conversation alongside your other learning resources.
What happens after someone accepts my language exchange letter?
A private chat opens as soon as the recipient accepts. Use it to agree on a manageable rhythm, the languages you want to practise, and whether you both want feedback. You can continue writing without sending another introductory letter.
Is Slowletter free, and how many letters can I send?
Slowletter is free to join. Each new introductory letter uses one credit. The default setup gives new accounts 20 letter credits and two reward clouds, each worth one credit and ready again two hours after you collect it. Rewards need to be collected; they do not accumulate automatically while you are away. Check your wallet and cloud timers for the current balance and reward timing. Private chat messages do not use letter credits.
What should I share with a new connection?
Start with interests and everyday experiences. Your letter recipient can see your display name and avatar, so choose those with care. Keep sensitive personal details private, and use the app’s block or report controls if a conversation makes you uncomfortable. Read Slowletter’s safety guidance.
